Wrestle

When I tell you
how I went to the woods
to hunger, to hunt,
to grapple with God,

you may think of Jacob
striving till daybreak,
out of joint and desperate
for blessing,

or careful Abraham
haggling for Sodom
down to ten righteous souls.

In the end,
the Lord pinned us all,
held us to our bargains,

for there can be no truce
with a changeable Father
who plays favorites.
